The correct deployment and use of Surface Marker Buoys and Delayed Surface
Marker Buoys is crucial to
diving safely in the sea both in the UK and abroad. SMBs/DSMBs serve a
number of purposes – a useful
reference point for a safe ascent/safety stop; a clear signal to boats
in the area that divers are ascending and
to keep clear; a signalling device to your boat/skipper to show where
you are and assist in an easy pick up; a
key reference point for drift dives and a visual aid if lost on the surface.
For our UK and foreign dive trips we
require that at least each buddy pair (preferably each diver) carries
a delayed SMB and should be able to use
this safely. Many dive centres abroad are also making their use mandatory
– this is for your safety.
As detailed above it is clear that delayed SMBs are a very important piece
of safety equipment but only if used
correctly. This new speciality gives divers the opportunity to learn and
practise the correct use of SMBs and
Delayed SMBs in the controlled environment of Capernwray under the supervision
of an Instructor.
